Smoothwall Web Filtering and Security

Schools connected to the NYCC Schools internet access are protected from the internet by a Smoothwall appliance, the Smoothwall appliance allows the school to have an individual filter and security policy.

If you are an administrator for your Smoothwall appliance you can make changes to your Smoothwall.  If you are not an administrator Schools ICT will manage your Smoothwall appliance.

The Smoothwall filters websites and searches using the following techniques:

Search term blocking: This only affects search terms entered in search boxes and does not trigger by text on the page.
Url and domain blocking: This affects the domains and urls used in the browser and does not trigger by text on the page.

Live@Edu Email

Live@Edu provides students and school staff with email and other applications they can use to collaborate and communicate online. 


The service is free and as it is a hosted service, schools do not need to worry about ongoing maintenance costs or updating the system.


Live@edu employs various technologies to support and protect students and staff. Live@Edu gives each user 10 gigabytes (GB) of e-mail storage, it’s built on Exchange 2010 and provides the familiar and reliable Outlook Web Access (OWA).

Cirrus DNS and Website Hosting

The Cirrus service employs cloud technologies to host your School website as well as handling DNS. To accomplish this we are running 4 cloud servers, fully redundant and backed up daily to provide the following services:

  • Host schools websites
  • MYSQL databases for advanced websites
  • Individual school website / account backup
  • Domain Name Server and Nominet Records
  • FTP accounts
  • Plesk user accounts for advanced web masters
  • Web Presence Builder (Website building application)
